ABOUT THE WORK

This artwork was created as a collaboration with Dries Van Noten.

Charles-Henri Sanson is wearing a dress, walking briskly toward the viewer. He is holding a clutch bag in his hand and is wearing a pair of short boots.

His body seems to glow divinely in the strong backlight from across the hallway. His fluttering black hair moves with a will of its own.

Symbolizing innocence, the idea from which the title is derived, white rose petals flutter in the air as if to congratulate him.

This work was featured in the November 2020 issue of the fashion magazine SPUR, in the special feature "Power of Manga/If Manga Depicted Mode."

In the included drawing prints, you can see how the artist began to draw this work.

In 1990, Keith!! was selected for Shonen Jump's 70th Hop Step Award. The work was his manga debut. He is best known for his realistic illustrations in Kokou no Hito, Innocent, and Innocent Rouge. Since Innocent, his drawing process has been fully digital. He says that switching to digital drawing has opened up a new world for him, enabling him to "fix his drawings as many times as he wants" and to be "thoroughly expressive."

He received the Excellence Award at the 14th Japan Media Arts Festival for Kokou no Hito. Innocent was named a Jury Selection at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival. It was also nominated for the 18th Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize and placed 7th in the Manga Taisho Awards in 2015. Innocent Rouge was named a Jury Selection at the 21st and 22nd Japan Media Arts Festivals. As of 2021, his work #DRCL is being serialized in Grand Jump.

Magazine carrying the works: Weekly Young Jump ~ Grand Jump
Year the series started: 2012

The manga tells the story of executioner siblings who live a life of "innocence" in Paris during the French Revolution in the 18th century. The protagonists are Charles-Henri Sanson, who led the beheading of King Louis XVI, and his sister Marie-Josephe. Publication of the story's sequel, Innocent Rouge, began in 2015 in Grand Jump. The works have been hailed by readers for their spectacular artwork that is often compared to paintings. Innocent Musicale, a stage production directed by Amon Miyamoto, was performed in 2019.

Original manga artwork is highly prone to fading, especially when it comes to color illustrations created using dye-based markers. Illustrations created for the covers of manga magazines, frontispieces, and comic book covers were not originally intended to be displayed or appreciated as works of art. They were designed to be printed and viewed by readers in magazines and comic books. Illustrations were often colored over copied line art, and in some cases, the characters and backgrounds were cut out and pasted in separately. To transform such illustrations into manga-art, they need to be retouched, such as by correcting discolored areas.

Since 2008, Shueisha has been working to digitally archive manga. Initially, we captured color originals using the EverSmart Supreme II, a high-precision scanner, and in 2015, we began using the Phase One IQ180, a high-resolution digital camera. Since 2020, we have been using Phase One’s Cultural Heritage series. This has allowed us to capture and preserve colors beyond the reproducible range of commercial printing, while also retaining the texture of the paper on which the illustrations were created.

Using this digitally archived data and imaging equipment, we retouch the artwork, restoring the original colors as they were when the illustrations were created. To produce the final print, color is carefully managed at each stage, from the original artwork to the captured data and printing.

For illustrations that were created digitally, we perform color management and printing in the wider-gamut Adobe RGB color space, instead of the sRGB space typically used in commercial printing, resulting in deeper and more vibrant colors.
