Hanging and Storing Scrolls

The following is an explanation on how to best handle hanging scrolls by Mr. Hideki Murayama of Tachiiri Kowado, Kyoto, who created these mountings.

Hanging the scroll

Remove the hanging scroll from the box and unravel the cord. Attach a hanging bracket to the wall above where the scroll will be displayed, hook the center of the cord to it and slowly unravel the scroll downwards. Finally, remove the futoshin from the bottom dowel.

Putting the scroll away

When storing the scroll, attach the futoshin to the bottom shaft. The purpose of the futoshin is to allow the scroll to be rolled up loosely, reducing any potential damage to the work. When positioning the futoshin, ensure that the narrow side is closer to you.
The size of the blocks on the left and right sides of the interior of the storage box indicate the orientation for the scroll. The side with the wider blocks is the back. When storing the scroll, position it so that the hanging bands are towards the back.

About Hanging Scrolls
In order to ensure the longevity of the work, please read the following carefully.

• The art work should be stored in a paulownia wood box and stored horizontally. The shaft is supported by the blocks on the inside of the box.
Storing the box upright for long periods of time can damage the shaft.
• The scroll should be displayed in an indoor space away from direct sunlight. It should not be directly exposed to air flowing from air conditioners, heaters, etc.
• When taking out or putting away the scroll, it is recommended that you perform the procedure on top of a cloth, tabletop, tatami mat, etc. with a clean surface. Do not place the scroll directly on dirty floor surfaces.
• Make sure your hands are clean when taking out or putting away the scroll.
• Refrain from touching the surface of the scroll, including the illustration, as much as possible.
When taking out or putting away the scroll, hold the shaft and, if necessary, prop the scroll up from the reverse side.
• When hanging or storing the scroll, be careful not to drop it. Dropping the work may cause bends or tears.
• When rolling up the scroll, do not roll it too tightly.
• If the scroll begins to skew while rolling it up, unroll it completely before rolling it again. Forcibly pushing the scroll to the left or right to align it may scratch the surface of the work.
• Hang the scroll against the surface of the wall. Hanging it in a spinning motion like a mobile sculpture may damage the scroll.
• Do not display or store the scroll in an extremely humid or dry environment. This can cause the scroll to become damaged with mold, stains, or ripples across the entire surface of the work.
