MANGA ART × KYOTO

In 1980, Araki received the runner-up prize at the 20th Tezuka Award for his debut work Poker Under Arms, which was published in Weekly Shonen Jump. In 1986, he started the series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in the same magazine. Cumulative circulation of the series has surpassed 120 million copies. As of 2026, he is currently serializing The JOJOLands in the monthly magazine Ultra Jump.

In 2009, he participated in an exhibition at the Louvre Museum, where Rohan Kishibe Goes to the Louvre (Rohan au Louvre) was unveiled. In 2013, collaborative works he created with Gucci were showcased worldwide in the fashion brand’s directly operated stores. In 2018, the Hirohiko Araki JoJo Exhibition: Ripples of Adventure was held in the National Art Center, Tokyo. This was the first time that a solo exhibition of an active manga artist has been held at a national art museum.

In 1967, Ikeda made her debut with Bara Yashiki no Shôjo while she was a student at Tokyo University of Education (now Tsukuba University). In 1972, her Margaret series The Rose of Versailles became a bestseller. In 1980, she won the Japan Cartoonists Association Award of Excellence for The Window of Orpheus. While in her forties, she decided to pursue a career in music, and in 1995, she enrolled in the Vocal Department of the Tokyo College of Music. Since graduating, she has been performing as a soprano singer and has appeared in numerous opera productions. She received France's Legion of Honour in 2009.

1716–1800 Birthplace: Present-day Kyoto Prefecture

Born in 1716, Jakuchu was the eldest son of a vegetable wholesaler’s household in Nishikikoji,
Kyoto. While working in the family business, he studied painting, creating works distinguished
by meticulous detail, masterful technique, and unique compositions. Gunkei-zu is lifelike, and
yet hyperreal at the same time. He is known for works like Juka Choju-zu Byobu (Birds and
Animals in the Flower Garden), which was created using the masume-gaki technique and
resembles a digital pixel-art piece.
The Kaki Tenjo-zu are ceiling paintings that Jakuchu painted when he was over 80 years old. In
the Meiji era, these paintings were compiled by Unsodo into a collection of colored woodblock
prints titled Jakuchu Gafu.

In 1983, she made her debut in the June issue of Manga Burikko. She went on to publish works such as Virgin (1985, Byakuya Shobo), Boyfriend is Better (1986, Hakusensha), pink (1989, Magazine House), Tokyo Girls Bravo (1993, JICC Publishing Bureau), River’s Edge (1994, Takarajimasha), I Am Your Toy (1995, Shodensha), Helter Skelter (2003, Shodensha), and Foam of the Daze (2003, Takarajimasha).

With Helter Skelter, she received the Excellence Award in the Manga Division at the 7th Japan Media Arts Festival, and the Grand Prize in the Manga category at the 8th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. In 1996, her creative activities were interrupted due to a traffic accident. In 2012, the film adaptation of Helter Skelter, directed by Mika Ninagawa, was released. In 2015, her solo exhibition “Girls’ Life on the Battlefield” was held at the Setagaya Literary Museum in Tokyo.

In 1992, Oda received the Weekly Shonen Jump Tezuka Award for* Wanted!* Serialization of ONE PIECE began five years later in 1997. In the same year, the first tankobon (individual) volume of the series was released. In 1999, the title was made into an animated series. The first ONE PIECE exhibition was held in 2012.

In 1992, Oda received the 2nd place prize in the 44th Tezuka Award for Wanted! (under the pseudonym "Tsuki Himizu Kikondo"). In 1993, Oda was selected for the 104th Hop Step Award for Ikki Yako. In 2006, ONE PIECE was chosen in the Japanese Media Arts Festival 100 Manga Selection. In 2012, Oda received first prize in the 41st Japan Cartoonists Association Award for ONE PIECE. In 2018, Oda received the Kumamoto Prefecture Honorary Award.

Oh!great made his debut in 1995 with SEPTEMBER KISS, which appeared in Manga Hot Milk (Byakuya-Shobo).

He has serialized Tenjho Tenge and Biorg Trinity (co-created with Otaro Maijo) in Ultra Jump (Shueisha), and Air Gear in Weekly Shonen Magazine (Kodansha). He won the 30th Kodansha Manga Award in the shonen category for Air Gear.

He has also designed numerous characters for anime and games. He is currently serializing Bakemonogatari (original story by Ishin Nishio) in Weekly Shonen Magazine.

Since his days as an art school student, he has been contributing examples of plastic model builds, scratch-built pieces, and color schemes, primarily for model magazines. He switches seamlessly between this line of work and his work as a sculptor, creating three-dimensional works using metal materials and cast works based on plastic model parts. He is currently publishing a series of works in the magazine Monthly Hobby Japan. Titled MIXINGSCAPE, these sci-fi mecha works were created using the kitbashing technique.

Kubo debuted in 1996 with Ultra Unholy Hearted Machine (published in Weekly Shonen Jump Summer Special). He published BLEACH in Weekly Shonen Jump between 2001 and 2016,. In 2018, he released a new work, Burn the Witch. Recently, in 2021, a new episode titled "BLEACH: New Breaths from Hell" was released.

Kubo won the 50th Shogakukan Manga Award for BLEACH in 2005. And in 2008, he received the Comic-Con International Inkpot Award.

In 1990, Keith!! was selected for Shonen Jump's 70th Hop Step Award. The work was his manga debut. He is best known for his realistic illustrations in Kokou no Hito, Innocent, and Innocent Rouge. Since Innocent, his drawing process has been fully digital. He says that switching to digital drawing has opened up a new world for him, enabling him to "fix his drawings as many times as he wants" and to be "thoroughly expressive."

He received the Excellence Award at the 14th Japan Media Arts Festival for Kokou no Hito. Innocent was named a Jury Selection at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival. It was also nominated for the 18th Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize and placed 7th in the Manga Taisho Awards in 2015. Innocent Rouge was named a Jury Selection at the 21st and 22nd Japan Media Arts Festivals. As of 2021, his work #DRCL is being serialized in Grand Jump.

Tanaami was born in Tokyo in 1936, graduated from Musashino Art University, and awarded a special prize by the Japan Advertising Artists Club in 1958. Having immersed in American counterculture and pop art since the 1960s, he was an independent artist who had been actively crossing boundaries to pursue his creative endeavors, which range from animation to silk screens, manga-like illustrations, collages, experimental films, paintings, three-dimensional works, and more, without restricting himself to any medium or genre. Inspired by his encounter with Andy Warhol, he had continued to experimentally challenge the major themes tackled by contemporary art today, such as art and design, art and products, everyday beauty, and the public and art, while using the design methodology of editing to the present day. Through more than half a century of creative activities, he has gained a high reputation worldwide as one of the pioneers of pop art, which symbolizes postwar Japan. Tanaami's recent major exhibitions include Keiichi Tanaami: Adventures in Memory (2024, The National Art Center Tokyo, Tokyo), TANAAMI!! AKATSUKA!! That’ s All Right!!(2023, PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO, Tokyo)the solo exhibitions Manhattan Universe (2022, Venus Over Manhattan, New York), A Mirror of the World (2022, Nanzuka, Tokyo), Tokyo Pop Underground (2019, Jeffrey Deitch, New York), and Keiichi Tanaami (2019, Kunstmuseum Luzern, Lucerne, Switzerland); as well as the group exhibitions Tokyo: Art & Photography (2021, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford), The World Goes Pop (2015, Tate Modern, London), International Pop (2015, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, USA), and many others. His work is in the permanent collections of MoMA (New York), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Art Institute of Chicago, M+ (Hong Kong), National Portrait Gallery (Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.), and Hamburger Bahnhof Museum for Contemporary Art (Berlin).

Go Nagai made his manga debut with Meakashi Polikichi (serialized in Bokura) in 1967. In 1968, he began publishing Harenchi Gakuen in Weekly Shonen Jump. The series was a tremendous hit. In 1972, he launched two series, Devilman in Weekly Shonen Magazine and Mazinger Z in Weekly Shonen Jump, while the animated versions were being developed for television simultaneously. In 1973, he started serializing Cutie Honey in Weekly Shonen Champion. His works span a wide range of genres, from gag comedy to dark fantasy, science fiction, and horror. As of 2024, he continues to publish series. In 2019, he was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier) by the French government.
