In late 2024, the PLAY! MUSEUM in Tokyo held an exhibition titled ONE PIECE ONLY that explored manga production processes behind Oda Eiichiro’s ONE PIECE. The presentation was a celebration of the publication of one thousand serialized chapters and one hundred volumes of this one-of-a-kind manga. This is the exhibition’s first overseas venue.
ONE PIECE was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine before it was published in distinct, single-title volumes beginning in 1997. ONE PIECE holds multiple Guinness World Records, most notably for having the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author, with over five hundred million copies in print worldwide. Since the release of volume 57 in 2010, the initial print run of every ONE PIECE volume has consistently exceeded three million copies.
Pages cut out from Japanese editions of ONE PIECE are presented here, beginning with chapter 1 and continuing through chapter 1,100. Photographs of Oda Eiichiro’s desk and production sites, materials used by editors for text speci¬cations, and printing plates from the series are also on view.
A high-speed camera recorded behind-the-scenes footage of the production processes of Weekly Shonen Jump and single volumes of Jump Comics. Videos are projected onto a widescreen display via three 4K projectors.
In 1992, Oda received the Weekly Shonen Jump Tezuka Award for Wanted! Serialization of ONE PIECE began five years later in 1997. In the same year, the first tankobon (individual) volume of the series was released. In 1999, the title was made into an animated series. The first ONE PIECE exhibition was held in 2012.
In 1992, Oda received the 2nd place prize in the 44th Tezuka Award for Wanted! (under the pseudonym "Tsuki Himizu Kikondo"). In 1993, Oda was selected for the 104th Hop Step Award for Ikki Yako.
